Not Exactly Paper Piecing - Broken Daisy Quilted Placemats
Not Exactly Paper Piecing, Quilted Placemats by Quiltworx
Paper piecing is wonderful for the accuracy of the piecing, the sharpness of corners and the way everything fits together. Paper piecing is a monster because all the paper must be torn away, which is tedious and can make a mess on the sewing room floor. What exactly is paper piecing? Actually, it is called foundation paper piecing because the fabric is sewn to a paper foundation. The pattern is printed in reverse on paper, the fabric pieces are placed under the paper and the stitching is done following the printed lines on the paper, sewing through the paper and the fabric. When the sewing is complete, the paper is torn away from the back of the fabric. In this class we will learn to do the piecing using the printed paper pattern and sewing through the paper but also without sewing through the paper. Experience both techniques then decide which one works best for you.
PURCHASE PATTERN: You must purchase the Broken Daisy pattern and the fabrics and bring them to class. We sell neither patterns nor fabric at the store. The pattern can be purchased directly from the Quiltworx website, see link below, or you can find it at several online quilt shops. It might possibly be found in a local quilt shop; call around to find out.
The Broken Daisy pattern can be found here on the Quiltworx website: http://www.quiltworx.com/patterns/broken-daisy-placemats/
This is a 2-day class. Many people find the Quiltworx instructions a bit intimidating so we will go through the entire preparations, cutting and paper piecing process in class. Day 1 will be cutting and prep. Day 2 will be sewing. We may or may not get to actually quilting the placemat in class. The goal is to complete one placemat top in class so it is at least ready to 'sandwich' with batting and backing, ready to quilt. Armed with the how-to knowledge, the other 3 placemats can be made at home.
