COMFY CAPE - Great little cool weather wrap for Serger or Sewing Machine
Two-session class, Tuesdays, March 5 and March 12, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Use your serger or sewing machine to make this cool little cape, lined or unlined, from wool, a wool blend or other suitable fabric. Most stitching is done in the two day-long class sessions but there is pre-work and work to do at home between classes.
The unlined version runs up fairly quickly on either a serger or a sewing machine. The lined version, with optional in-seam pockets, takes just a little longer. With the serger you can make decorative exposed seams as seen on the red plaid sample. With either sewing machine or serger you can insert narrow piping in the seams for contrast and interest. With the sewing machine, seams can be decorated with a decorative tape and/or decorative top stitching. Choose to use buttons to create ‘sleeves’ or leave the cape sides unfettered.
The one-size-fits-most pattern is included in the class fee, a $20 value. Sample capes are at the store and you are welcome to stop by and try them on for size. You will need to pick up your pattern prior to class, prepare the pattern and cut out the cape at home. Bring the cut pieces to class. If help is needed with laying out and cutting the pattern, there will be a preparations session scheduled on the Sunday afternoon before the first class, for an additional fee. Even though one of the samples is plaid, I do NOT recommend a plaid fabric. The curved seams make matching plaids difficult.
Written instructions include all cutting and construction instructions. Pattern and instructions are creations of Susan Nelson, class instructor.
Click here for the Materials and Supplies list. Included are pre-class preparations and instructions for lengthening or enlarging the pattern. Extra fabric is needed for matching plaids and for making the cape larger or longer. Nominally 2 1/2 yds of 60" wide fabric or 3 1/2 yds of 44" wide fabric are needed. Extra yardage is needed for matching plaids, for lengthening the pattern or enlarging it. Additionally it is always a good idea to buy a bit of extra fabric. I usually get an extra 1/2 yard.
The finished length of the cape, at the center back from neck to hem, is about 27 1/2 inches. Instructions are included with the pattern for lengthening it, and also to make the cape a bit larger should that be needed. Sample capes, one made on a sewing machine and one made on a serger, are at the store. You are welcome to stop by and try them on for size.
Classes are small; limited to 6 people. If classes are full you can add your name to the Wait List to be notified when new classes are scheduled.
