Learn to Quilt 1, 2025

Note* - see Notes regarding the Saturday classes and the October-November class
This is an introduction to quilting and covers all the basics.  Learn about fabric selection and fabric preparations, batting and thread choices.  Learn:

How to use a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat for precise cutting,
How to sew consistently accurate seams,
How to chain piece,
Pressing techniques,
How to accurately match seams
How to make the quilt sandwich
How to quilt
How to trim after quilting (aka square-up)
How to bind
How to make a label . . . . .and more.
We'll go from cutting, through piecing together a quilt top, adding borders with corner blocks and mitered corners, making the quilt sandwich, quilting with presser foot, squaring up and binding the quilt.

Bring your own machine to class; just a basic machine is needed; one that does straight stitching.  There will be homework.  Much of the sewing will be done at home.

The class project is the small lap quilt shown.  It measures approximately 41x41 inches. Great as a baby quilt, pet quilt, lap quilt, bed topper, table topper, etc.  The My Take 4 Quilt pattern, designed for this class, is included in the class fee.  Batting is also included in the class fee.

Click here for the materials and supplies list for the class.  It can be downloaded and printed.

In class you will be given a USB drive that contains all of the class handouts in pdf file format: instructions, reference materials and 'slide shows' of various steps in making the quilt top.  These do not replace your coming to class.  Printed 'class copies' of the handouts will be available in class, for use in class.  So you need not bring your own copies to class.

We have lots of fun in the class, learn a lot about our sewing machines, learn how to sometimes salvage mistakes by turning them into creative opportunities, and we learn a lot from each other as well as from the fuddy-duddy old instructor.  I hope you will come join the class.

I communicate about the class via email.   Please be sure your email address is correct.  You might want to add my email address to your contacts to help ensure that my emails do not go to spam.

Class are small; class size is limited to 6 people.  If classes are full you can send me an email with your name and email address, to be notified when new classes are scheduled.
