BabyLock Serger Monthly Class (DATES TENTATIVE pending status of NC Stay-at-Home mandate)
Class is ONLY for BABYLOCK sergers that are self-threading (air-jet threading) loopers
JUNE 16, 2020 - T-shirt and Sweatshirt Techniques
Overlock machines
In this class we take a look at stitches to use to make seams and hems, sewing on ribbing, other ways to finish neck and sleeve edges and how to assemble the garment. You can bring a cut-out, ready to sew t-shirt of sweatshirt to work on as well as practice fabric pieces for sample stitching the different stitches. You may use whatever pattern you wish for this knit garment.
JULY 21, 2020 - '5th Avenue Serger Clutch'
Overlock/cover/chainstitch combination machines with wavestitch; not suitable for overlock-only machines.
We will make the clutch in this class. Techniques include decorative chain/cover stitch, flatlock wave stitch, inserting a zipper, a gathered insert and more. For this class a materials list will be provided and you bring your own materials. An actual completed bag is at the store if you'd like to see it before committing to the class.
Click here for the Materials List for this class. All materials are to be cut before class.
Beyond JULY class topics will be posted soon.
General Serger class Description
Did you know that sergers can be used to do all of these things? Create decorative stitches, pleats and pintucks; insert zippers, piping and cording; make decorative crochet ruffles and trims; bind edges of fabrics; create a blanket stitch edge on a fleece blanket; attach beads and sequins to fabric; hem skirts, pants, shirts and all manner of other things; make decorative trims that can be sewn onto clothes; gather and ruffle;make tassels; attach lace; attach elastic; make ruffled ‘lettuce edges’, make wire-edged ribbon for tying up gift packages; and the list goes on!!!
In each class a technique and/or a foot or accessory available for BabyLock sergers will be featured. Some techniques will be very basic; some will be more advanced. Some classes will be applicable to both overlock machines and the overlock/cover/chainstitch machines; some months will be applicable only to cover/chain stitch machines. Each month's class description will let you know if it is for both types of machines or only the overlock/cover/chainstitch machines. For hands-on experience bring your BabyLock serger. The technique and appropriate foot/accessory will be demonstrated; then you can try it on your machine. If you bought a foot kit for your machine and haven't quite figured them all out yet, this is a great opportunity to do so! If you do not have the featured foot/accessory, no problem. Try it out in class and decide it is a foot you want. Not all feet fit all serger models; you'll learn which ones fit your machine.
Some classes are SAMPLES CLASS and some are PROJECT CLASSES. In all classes we will make samples that can be taken home to keep in your personal ‘Serger Sample Book’, or to maybe use in a 'sampler quilt'. In all classes you will get suggestions and ideas for how put the foot/technique to practical or decorative use.
For SAMPLES CLASSES, materials and special threads will be provided but you will bring 'regular' serger thread, general sewing supplies and your serger. For PROJECT CLASSES you will be asked to bring some materials but you'll know in advance when this is expected.
